City of Asheville announces traffic pattern changes coming to McDowell Street and Southside Avenue

Beginning this week (December 9 – 13),  construction associated with the Greenway Connector project will affect traffic and pedestrian routes at the McDowell Street and Southside Avenue intersection.

Among the upcoming changes, the existing northbound right turn slip lane from McDowell Street onto eastbound Southside Avenue will be removed. McDowell Street will remain a four-lane road with a right turn lane onto Southside Avenue at the intersection. The left turn lane from northbound McDowell Street onto Phifer Street will remain in place. These changes will allow for safer multimodal travel as well as continuous sidewalk and crosswalks for pedestrians in this intersection.

Lane Closures will be necessary for construction, occurring Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Work not requiring lane closures may take place outside of these hours. Construction on this project began earlier this year and is expected to be complete in mid 2026. Also upcoming in the construction phase:

  • The right turn lane from northbound Southside Avenue onto Short Coxe Avenue will be removed to improve traffic flow and safety.
  • Improvements will take place on Depot Street on the section from the Lyman Street/Roberts Street/Clingman Avenue traffic circle to Green’s Mini Mart.

The goal of the Greenway Connector project is to increase safety for all users of these streets and to create connectivity in Asheville’s greenway network for recreation and transportation use. To receive email updates, subscribe on the project page.
