The City of Asheville is pleased to share the latest design concept from ADW Architects for the new Fire Station 9, marking another step forward in the development of the Oakley Public Safety Complex.

Project Overview and Site Design

This project represents the first phase of an initiative to modernize public safety facilities in the Oakley community, as identified by the 2023 Comprehensive Facility Study. By replacing the current Fire Station 9 facility with a new structure at 711 Fairview Road, the City aims to provide more functional, efficient facilities for first responders, ultimately improving service to the community.

The new station will be located on a 0.65-acre site at 711 Fairview Road, which currently houses the Asheville Police Department’s Oakley Resource Center. APD’s resource center will be relocated to the former Station 9 space at Murphy-Oakley Community Center, which will be upfitted for police needs.

Project Timeline

This project is funded by the 2024 general obligation bond funds. While the renderings shared provide a high-level idea of the project, the design process requires additional steps before construction can begin. Upcoming project milestones include:

  • Design Finalization: Late 2026
  • Construction: 2027 – 2028
Community and staff input shape concept designs

The design of the new Fire Station 9 is a true testament to collaboration. Staff worked closely with Asheville Fire Department members to ensure the new layout and features directly address the day-to-day operational needs of firefighters, enabling them to serve the community with maximum efficiency and safety.

This vision was further shaped by the invaluable feedback received from the community. Community input was essential in defining how this facility integrates into the Oakley neighborhood, ensuring the new station is not only a functional asset for public safety but also a welcoming and complementary addition to the Oakley landscape.

The public is invited to learn more about the broader initiative at the Oakley Public Safety Complex project page.
