City Council proclaims September & October as Latinx Heritage Months

In the City Council Meeting of September 13th, 2022, Council member Kim Roney read the Proclamation on behalf of the City of Asheville naming September and October Latinx Heritage Months.  These months celebrate the start of a significant season for many, as many Central and South American countries celebrate their independence days.

What does it celebrate? / ¿Qué es lo que se celebra?

Today it’s a day of celebration in many Latin American countries! September 15th marks the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its Independence on September 16th -it’s not Cinco de Mayo-, Chile on the 18th, and Belize on the 21th. Having a whole month to celebrate also means that Columbus Day, or Día de la Raza in Latin America, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

The Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. According to the Library of Congress, it recognizes Hispanic American contributions to US society and culture. It was designated in 1968 when Congress passed Pub. L. 90-498 authorizing and requesting the President to issue an annual proclamation of National Hispanic Heritage during mid- September.

Hispanic and Latin Importance / Importancia Hispana y Latina

According to the most recent data from the Census Bureau, about the 331 million people who live in the United States, 18.9% identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino. In Buncombe County they represent a 7.2%, being the largest minority group, and in the CIty of Asheville, the 6.7%.

The White House proclamation was clear: “During National Hispanic Heritage Month, we reaffirm that diversity is one of our country’s greatest strengths.  We also acknowledge the Hispanic leaders who have stayed in the struggle for equal justice to ensure that everyone in this Nation can contribute their talents and have the opportunity to thrive.”

Where can you celebrate? / ¿Dónde puedes celebrar?

Of course, this means there will be a lot of activities. Individuals and organizations in the Asheville area have planned several events, here is just a sample
