Asheville Police re-accreditation process to include public meeting

Posted on July 31, 2017March 13, 2019 by Polly McDaniel

The Asheville Police Department is scheduled for an on-site assessment as part of the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) accreditation process. A team of assessors from CALEA will arrive August 7 to examine all aspects of the Asheville Police Department’s policy, procedures, management, operations and support services.

Administered by CALEA, the voluntary accreditation program requires law enforcement agencies to comply with national best practices and professional standards.

As part of the on-site assessment, department employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 8. The session will take place in the 4th floor conference room of the Asheville Municipal Building, 100 Court Plaza.

If a member of the public is unable to attend the public information session, but would still like to provide comments to the assessment team, they are encouraged to call 828-259-5548 from 2 to 4 p.m. August 8.
Telephone comments, as well as public comment at the public information session, will be limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards. Information on the accreditation process can be located on the Asheville Police Department webpage or calea.org.

Community members wishing to offer written comments about the Asheville Police Department’s ability to meet the standards for accreditation can send correspondence to:
