The Asheville Police Department today recognizes and celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first 911 call.
On Feb. 16, 1968, Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite made the first 911 call from the Haleyville City Hall. From that small beginning, 911 technology has become more sophisticated in response to consumer expectations.
Each advancement has improved our nation’s ability to get better, more reliable information to first responders so they can do their job of saving lives and property.
In 2017, the Asheville Police Departments Communications Division received more than 36,000 911 calls from the Emergency Operations Center; in addition to the more 163,000 calls it receives annually.
APD Deputy Chief Wade Wood said this enhanced technology has saved numerous lives throughout the years since its inception. “Through continued advancements, (i.e. text 911, and e911), the system continues to strive to ensure quick, reliable service to individuals in need,” Wood added.
