Asheville Municipal Golf Course continues to recover from Tropical Storm Helene’s devestating effects, but support for this historic community facility, continues to be ace. Our “Muni” has been recognized by the 2026 Best of North Carolina Awards by Guide to North Carolina—earning Regional Winner in the Golf Courses category!
This honor is especially meaningful, with fewer than 10% of businesses across the state receiving this distinction. City staff are proud to serve such an amazing community and grateful for every vote that helped make this possible.
Despite the damage caused by Helene, the “little course that could” continues to serve the community.
The back nine remains open for golfers, with reservations and tee times available through our partners at the Asheville Muni website. And thanks to the creativity and an ability to pivot by City of Asheville staff, the front nine is currently serving as a disc golf course as the Municipal Golf Course Front 9 Restoration Project continues.
You can tee up information about our recovery project and sign up for emailed updated on our project page.
The City anticipates funding for the Municipal Golf Course Front 9 Restoration project to come from the FEMA Public Assistance program.
Background
The Asheville Municipal Golf Course is a public course owned by the City of Asheville. The Donald Ross designed course was opened in 1927, and is one of the oldest golf courses in western North Carolina. The course is steeped in history; Muni was the first public golf course in North Carolina and became the first integrated public golf course in the Southeast. Both the Muni clubhouse and course were listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
