North Carolina’s Governor Josh Stein today released a statement regarding the expected deployment of ICE and Border Patrol agents to the state.

His message to North Carolinians was one of peace, respect for the rule of law, and standing by our neighbors.

In Asheville, Mayor Esther Manheimer echoed those thoughts, highlighting the City’s dedication to public safety and community.

“Today, Governor Stein released a statement concerning the possibility of ICE and Border Patrol Agents in North Carolina.  We have learned that Asheville may be a targeted city.  I stand with the Governor in his strong statement in support of all of our civil rights. We value our strong relationships with all members of our community and remain dedicated to building trust while upholding the law. We believe every person, regardless of immigration status, should feel safe in the community they call home. Asheville Police Department (APD) officers are dedicated to maintaining public safety, and as stated by Chief Lamb, APD does not have the authority to enforce immigration law.”
