Meet a firefighter. Sign up for smoke alarm installation. And learn what you can do to prevent a fire in your home or what to do if one breaks out.

The Asheville Fire Department invites the whole family to come out for AFD’s Fire Prevention Week kickoff event, happening from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 30 at Home Depot, 127 Action Circle.

Hearts with Hands will also be at this event, collecting items for hurricane relief victims. Cleaning supplies, canned food and clothing are all welcome, in addition to monetary donations. Participants can be eligible to win a prize!

The National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Prevention Week runs from Oct. 8-14 this year with the theme of “every second counts.” As a participant, the Asheville Fire Department is helping to spread the word.

“Every day throughout the month of October, AFD will deliver fire safety prevention education somewhere in Asheville,” said AFD Fire Marshal Kelly Hinz. That includes to local schools.

Look for the Asheville Fire Department on Oct. 7 at Asheville City Market downtown and at Asheville Outlets. Remember, every second counts, plan two ways out! Come learn how you can better protect your home and family from a devastating fire.
