The Retreat, a 110-unit mixed-income, affordable housing development for seniors in Charlotte, opened in 2013. The project was a joint effort by Laurel Street Residential and the Charlotte Housing Authority.

Asheville City Council held a worksession on affordable housing Sept. 6 at the U.S. Cellular Center Banquet Hall.

During the session, Council reviewed the realities of local affordable housing needs, barriers to building affordable housing and the role of the City as a partner. Staff and outside speakers presented information on how we move forward together as a community to address this important challenge affecting many residents.

Conversation focused on the complexities around this issue. The goal was to identify the most effective tools the community can use to address the affordable housing issue.
