APR Innovators: Jason Crenshaw

Jason Crenshaw

APR Innovators is an Asheville Parks & Recreation series highlighting team members going above and beyond to bring huge value to community members through knowledge, connections, and insight that come from a desire to create the best city possible through the power of high-quality recreation programs and safe parks that welcome everyone.

When did you join the Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) team?

I joined in September 2021 as Labor Crews Manager overseeing a team that handles athletic fields, landscaping, mowing, and maintenance. Previous to joining the team, I was with another local parks and recreation department for about 11 years.

What inspired you to apply to join the team?

I was looking for a change of pace and felt like it was time to see what other options were available. The position offered intriguing opportunities.

Which accomplishments are you most proud of in terms of your work with the department?

It sounds cliche, but the accomplishment I’m most proud of is the trust and admiration I’ve developed with my coworkers. I am only as successful as they are, so a lot of my accomplishments are also their accomplishments. Just in the couple years I have been here, we have relocated our shop, renovated pools, and revitalized our entire parks and greenways systems.

For you personally, what does it mean to work for the department?

I love it. I have a great community of friends and colleagues. Everyday is a new challenge. I am fortunate to work with some of the best in the industry and we are constantly finding new and innovative ways to improve our department.

How have you grown professionally by working with APR?

I have earned the Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification, obtained my Certified Park and Professional (CPRP) designation, and graduated from National Recreation and Park Association’s two-year Maintenance Management School. Most recently, I was appointed to a seat on the College of Agriculture and Life Science (CALS) Alumni and Friends Society Advisory Board for NC State University.

What do you do for fun when you’re not working?

I love skiing and playing golf. I am an avid NC State fan and enjoy college sports. I also enjoy spending time with family and friends.

How would you complete this sentence: I work for Asheville Parks & Recreation because…

I am helping to enrich the lives of the public by providing beautiful, safe parks for them to enjoy.
