What we do

We’re Working for You!

Building fairness, access, and opportunity for all Asheville residents.

We work to strengthen human relations, remove barriers, prevent discrimination, and ensure compliance across all areas of City government. Through partnerships, action plans, and policy guidance, we are creating a community where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

  • Human Relations: Promoting positive, respectful community interactions, and equal opportunities.
  • Anti-Discrimination: Preventing and correcting unfair treatment.
  • Compliance: Upholding standards that protect fairness and access.

Understanding Fairness and Access

In our work, we recognize that people come from many different starting points and experiences. Overcoming discrimination means ensuring access and opportunity for all based on real needs—so that everyone has the ability to succeed.

The systems and policies we live with today have been shaped by both past and present decisions, sometimes creating unequal barriers. Through intentional human relations efforts and anti-discrimination practices, we strive to remove those barriers and build a stronger, more connected Asheville.

Human Relations Commission

NOTICE: The Humans Relations Commission is not currently meeting. We will update you once the commission relaunches in the near future.

The Human Relations Commission of Asheville (HRCA) advises the City Council and champions principles of anti-discrimination, fairness, and community respect. HRCA prioritizes improving interpersonal and institutional relationships, fostering trust, and supporting a thriving Asheville where all individuals and groups can flourish.
