The City of Asheville is excited to announce the installation of a new, interactive piece of public art where the Reed Creek Greenway intersects with Catawba Street in North Asheville.
A celebratory ribbon cutting for the Broadway Public Safety Station Public Art project will be held onsite on Oct. 20 at 5 p.m. The public is invited to attend the unveiling and be among the first to interact with this unique community asset.
The City’s One Percent for Public Art Policy funded the installation through the development of the nearby LEED-certified Broadway Public Safety Station, located just north of downtown. Functioning as both a striking visual landmark and a playable musical instrument, the sculpture was designed and fabricated by artists Nick Geurts and Alex Irvine, who were commissioned by the City of Asheville following a competitive call-for-artists process.
Following public feedback that revealed a desire for a playable sound sculpture, the project was designed to prioritize interactivity and local collaboration. The installation features custom ceramic tiles handcrafted by Asheville residents during multiple community tile-making events held in 2023 and 2025. Did you create a tile? Now you can come find where it landed on the final piece!
The City of Asheville would like to thank the many community members who contributed their time and inspiration to create the beautiful tiles for this project. Additional thanks go to Odyssey Clayworks for hosting the community tile-making events, and to artists Nick Geurts and Alex Irvine for bringing this creative vision to life.
