Celebrate our waterways: Free Lake and Learn event July 10 at Lake Julian

Lake Julian

Looking for your family’s next summer adventure? Join us for a free “Lake and Learn” event from 2:30-4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 10, at Lake Julian. Kids of all ages can explore water-themed science and play through arts and crafts and STEM learning activities celebrating our watershed.

Registration is not required, but you can get more details and sign up on this event web page. Be sure to bring water bottles, sunscreen, & dress for outdoor play!

Partners include the City of Asheville Stormwater Services, Buncombe County environmental educators, recreation services, and library staff, the NC Arboretum’s ecoEXPLORE program, the Asheville Museum of Science, RiverLink, and Buncombe County Environmental Educators & Library staff.

It’s part of RiverLink’s inaugural Creek Week, July 6-11, a county-wide celebration of stewardship & appreciation of our local waterways.

The City’s Stormwater Services Division, part of the Public Works Department, maintains the stormwater drainage system within the public right-of-way. This includes regular upkeep of catch basins, manholes, storm drain pipes/culverts, open drainage systems such as ditches and channels, and Stormwater Control Measures including detention ponds and created wetlands. With a comprehensive system in place, stormwater runoff is efficiently channeled through a network of storm drains, pipes, ditches, and culverts to reduce the potential of flooding that could impact our roads and community.
