DeVonte talking to a coworker in a gymWhen did you join the Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) team?

I originally joined APR as a seasonal worker in 2012 and returned as a full time staff member in May of 2023. Initially, I was looking for an active and fun seasonal job in college, and stayed because I enjoyed connecting with coworkers and the community.

Working for the department allows me to enjoy building community. Programming, as well as working with kids and teens, is a meaningful way to impact future generations’ desire to do the same. I’ve worked as recreation support staff, summer seasonal staff, and my current role as a program leader.

How have you grown professionally by working with APR?

During my time at APR, I have strengthened my leadership and planning skills.

Which accomplishments are you most proud of in terms of your work with the department?

I am most proud when I get positive feedback from program participants.

Seeing how everyone came together in the aftermath of the storm, as well as seeing so many strangers helping from all over, was beautiful. The entire experience changed the way I view the power of community and encourages me to continue investing my time and energy into building and supporting ours.

What do you do when you’re not working?

I enjoy working out and spending time with my family.
