Bus service changes due to I-26 construction closures

Asheville Bus shelter

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is permanently closing ramps in April and May as part of ongoing construction for the Interstate 26 Connector project.

  • The Riverside Drive entrance ramp to I-240/I-26 is planned to close at 9 p.m. on April 16.
  • The I-240/I-26 off ramp onto Hill Street is planned to close at 9 p.m. on April 17.

As a result of these permanent ramp closures, the Asheville Rides Transit (ART) bus routes WE1, WE2, and W5 will detour by turning right from Patton Avenue onto Haywood Street to I-240 westbound, and rejoining the route at the junction of I-26 and I-240.

Bus stop number 154 at Hill St. and Riverside Dr. will no longer be serviced. The City posted a closure sign at the bus stop on April 2 to give riders advance notice of this change.

Passengers should now use bus stop number 311 at Atkinson St. at Hill St. which is less than a quarter mile, or a 5-10 minute walk, from stop 154. Those passengers will need to take route N3, and transfer to their normal route (WE1, WE2, or W5) at the ART Station to go westbound. Route N3 serves the stop every 30 minutes, at :05 and :35 each hour.
