Asheville City Manager Debra Campbell has named Deputy Jackie Stepp as Interim Police Chief, effective November 21. Chief Stepp has served the Asheville community with the Asheville Police Department (APD) for 20 years. She serves as one of the deputy chiefs for the department, currently overseeing the Administrative Bureau.

The announcement follows the retirement announcement of  APD Chief Michael Lamb in September.

“I am confident the department will continue delivering the highest level of service to our community under Interim Chief Jackie Stepp’s leadership,” said City Manager Debra Campbell. “Her dedication to this organization and commitment to public service and safety will ensure a smooth and effective transition in this vital interim role.

“I know firsthand the dedication and professionalism that define this department, and I am honored to serve the men and women of the Asheville Police Department, as well as our community in this Interim Chief role,” said Interim Chief Stepp.

More information about the recruitment process for a new chief will be communicated as plans are finalized
