Starting this week, Sanitation crews will collect brush trimmings only for two weeks and then, on October 20, switch to leaf collection only for two weeks. This alternating cycle will continue until January 16, 2026. This rotation between brush trimmings and leaf collection is necessary while brush disposal sites continue processing the large volume of vegetative debris from Tropical Storm Helene.
Residents’ scheduled yard waste weeks will remain the same; however, Sanitation will only be able to pick up one material (either brush or leaves) during the residents’ scheduled week. See the example provided below for “A” week residents.
City brush collection requirements:
- All yard waste must be placed curbside by 7 a.m. on the Monday of the designated collection week.
- Yard waste must not be placed on storm drains or near utility structures, including guy wires, meter boxes, or underneath low-hanging utility lines.
- Yard waste piles should be placed at least 5 feet from structures such as fences, mailboxes, and utility poles.
- Yard waste may be placed in reusable containers marked “brush” or “leaves”, not exceeding 50 pounds and free of accumulated rainwater.
- Biodegradable paper yard waste bags containing brush or leaves must not exceed 25 pounds.
- No tree trunks, stumps, or limbs larger than six inches in diameter, longer than four feet, or weighing more than 50 pounds will be collected by the City.
- Thorny vegetation must be trimmed to lengths of two feet or less and placed in a separate pile from other tree and shrubbery trimmings.
- Brush trimmings and leaves are not allowed in trash or recycle carts.
- Grass clippings will not be collected and should not be placed with brush trimmings.
- Pumpkins and gourds are not permitted in curbside yard waste bags or bins. These items can be disposed of free of charge during the City-County sponsored collection events on 11/8 (Stephens-Lee Community Center) and 12/6 (Skyland/South Buncombe Library), 10 am – 2 pm.
- As a reminder, please do not place brush or leaves in the trash or recycling carts.
Bagged leaves can also be composted at the Buncombe County Landfill. The cost is two bags for $1. Leaves must be separated from other yard waste/organic materials. For more information, click here and navigate to “Miscellaneous Items.”
