The City of Asheville is inviting community members to apply to serve on four newly formed Helene Recovery Boards, designed to guide Asheville’s recovery and resilience efforts following Tropical Storm Helene.

“These boards will provide input to City Council, share information within their networks, and ensure the community’s voice is central in shaping recovery strategies,” said Project Manager Alex Smith.

The four Helene Recovery Boards will provide input on the following areas:

  • Housing – Addressing post-disaster housing stability, exploring temporary and permanent housing solutions for displaced residents, and proactive policies to reduce future displacement.
  • Economy – Rebuilding and revitalizing Asheville’s economy, expanding resilience and diversification, placemaking and long-term growth, advancing workforce development programs, broadening the city’s contractor pool for recovery projects, and strengthening outreach to small and underrepresented businesses.
  • People & Environment – policy recommendations that advance environmental sustainability, leveraging existing resources and tools, supporting neighborhood-level resilience, and promoting community preparedness and engagement.
  • Infrastructure – the strategic rebuild of damaged infrastructure, including water systems, stormwater and flood management, parks, greenways, as well as recreation facilities, and leveraging partnerships and funding programs for  future resilience.

Board members will also support City Council by sharing information through their individual networks. For example, members of the temporary Economy Helene Recovery Board will support City Council by communicating funding opportunities for rebuilding through their own established networks.
