Repairs on track for early October completion in both Rankin and Wall Street garages
The City of Asheville is making key adjustments to the ongoing Parking Garage Capital Improvements Project to reduce disruption and keep work on schedule. The Rankin Avenue Garage will partially reopen on Monday, September 1, while the Wall Street Garage will begin a partial closure.
- The goal is to have both garages open by early October. Adjustments to the project schedule are necessary because additional structural repairs were recently identified on the upper levels of the Rankin Avenue Garage, extending the current repair work by about one week. The lower levels of the garage are safe to reopen while crews complete the necessary work on the upper levels.
Here’s a breakdown of the changes:
- Rankin Avenue Garage: Starting Monday, September 1, the lower levels (1A and 1B) will reopen for public parking. Construction will continue on the upper levels, which will remain closed.
- Wall Street Garage: The upper levels will close on Monday, September 1, to allow construction to begin. The lower levels will remain open for public parking. The public should be aware that construction noise and dust are expected during this initial phase of work.
- Entry and exit will remain the same for both parking garages during this transition period.
This updated project schedule moves up the start of the noisiest and most disruptive work at the Wall Street Garage to keep the project on track and avoid part of the busy season when more visitors and residents will be in the downtown area.
Permit Holder Information
Monthly permit holders for both the Wall Street and Rankin Avenue garages can use their permits at any of the four downtown City garages during this time. Permit holders will still be able to access their respective garages during the partial closures. Rankin Avenue garage permits will not be changed back to Rankin Ave Garage access-only until after Rankin Ave Garage fully reopens. Permit holders will be contacted with information about their permit access when those changes will occur.
Looking Ahead
A full closure of the Wall Street Garage is not planned until the Rankin Avenue Garage is fully reopened. The Rankin Avenue Garage is currently expected to fully reopen on the weekend of September 12, but the exact dates and times will be announced as soon as they are finalized. The project team will continue to provide updates as work progresses, acknowledging that weather and the discovery of any additional structural issues could impact the schedule.
