What’s Up AVL!
The City of Asheville’s bi-monthly radio show allows the community to take a deep dive with the City of Asheville staff and departments.
You can learn about different departments and what projects are taking place in your community.
On this week’s episode, host Sam Parada brings back regular guest James Shelton, Community Development Division Manager for the City’s Economic & Community Development Department. James discusses updates on CDBG-DR and areas where the City is preparing to use the funds on recovery-related projects.
On January 16, 2025, following a December 2024 Congressional appropriation, HUD allocated $225,010,000 in CDBG-DR funds for the City’s recovery from the unprecedented damage caused by Tropical Storm Helene.
CDBG-DR is a federal disaster recovery program that provides funding to communities affected by major disasters. Unlike the City’s annual Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, CDBG-DR funds are not permanent and must be approved by Congress in response to specific events. These funds must be used to address unmet disaster-related needs, particularly in housing, economic revitalization, and infrastructure restoration.
You can learn more about CDBG-DR on our Asheville Recovers website.
