The River Arts District Transportation Improvement Project (RADTIP) was completed in 2021.
The purpose of the $35 million project was to rebuild the transportation network along the east side of the French Broad River in the River Arts District, with the long term vision of supporting businesses, residents, artists and the greater community vision adopted in the 2004 Wilma Dykeman RiverWay Master Plan.
Highlights of the RADTIP:
- Construct four miles of sidewalk and two miles of greenway
- Install a two-mile-long stormwater management system and three constructed wetlands to protect the French Broad River
- Increase river access by doing the following: reconstruct the boat put-in at Jean Webb Park, build a new boat ramp with parking just south of Craven Street, and add another step access at Amboy Road River Park just upstream
- Upgrade the area’s power transmission network
- Construct two roundabouts for safer traffic flow
- Add bike lanes including the City’s first protected bike lane
- Add almost 200 new public parking spaces
- Provide about 9 acres of new parkland
- Install several new pieces of public art
Funding partners included the U.S. Department of Transportation, Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority, N.C. Department of Transportation, N.C. Clean Water Management Trust Fund, N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, and the City of Asheville.
