Happening Now

The City of Asheville Parks & Recreation Department has contracted with Wildlands Engineering, Inc. to complete an assessment and provide preliminary design information of improvements to ensure the long term integrity of the pond, enhance public safety and explore recreational and ecological opportunities that may be compatible with proposed improvements.  The scope of work includes research, field investigation, an environmental assessment and preparation of concept designs.

Background

The Azalea Park Pond is located within Azalea Park at 395 Azalea Road.  The 4-acre man-made pond is situated at the eastern edge of the park and varies in depth.  It’s stocked with fish by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission who also partnered with the City on construction of a recreational fishing pier.

Over the years, water began spilling over the embankment from what appears to be a low point at the southeastern corner of the pond.  This spillage has impacted land to the east and south of the pond, including the Azalea Dog Park.  Temporary repairs have been made in the past to help mitigate the problem and the information gained from this effort will help guide a more permanent solution.
