About Asheville Transit

Asheville Transit provides bus service service throughout the City of Asheville and other local areas with 24 bus routes running from 6 a.m.-11:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

These routes originate from the Transit Center, located downtown at 49 Coxe Avenue next to the U.S. Post Office. The center provides such amenities as clean restrooms, indoor and outdoor seating, and an on-duty information assistant from whom you can obtain the latest maps and schedules or from whom you may purchase monthly and annual passes and ticket books. They can answer any questions you may have about riding the bus in Asheville.

Paratransit Services Available

Asheville Transit provides paratransit transportation to all qualifying individuals who are unable to use the bus due to a handicap. Paratransit transportation is provided by Mountain Mobility of Buncombe County under contract to Asheville Transit. The telephone number for information, sign-up, and arranging transportation is (828) 258-0186. Mountain Mobility is located at the Riverside Business Park at 2000 Riverside Drive, Suite 17, Asheville, NC 28804.

Hop & Ride

The Biltmore Square Mall & Goodwill Industries at 1616 Patton now host Hop & Ride locations. Starting Saturday, Feb. 14th, 2009, drivers will be able to park in reserved spaces at both locations and use the bus to get into town.

The Hop & Ride program is designed to help commuters in south and west Asheville avoid the hassles of driving and parking in downtown Asheville. Each location will have ten spaces near a bus shelter. Parking is free, although a one-way bus fare is $1.00.

The bus schedule for the Hop & Ride is as follows: At the Biltmore Square Mall: Route #9 will arrive at the top of the hour from 8am to 6pm, Monday though Saturday. At the Goodwill Industries: Route #1 will arrive at the bottom of the hour from 5:30am to 6:30pm, Monday thru Saturday. There is no bus service city-wide on Sundays.

Holidays

Asheville Transit operates Monday through Saturday throughout the year, averaging 307 days of operation each year, with only the following holidays having no bus service:

  • New Year's Day - Friday, January 1, 2010
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day - Monday, January 18, 2010
  • Easter Monday - Monday, April 5, 2010
  • Memorial Day - Monday, May 25, 2009
  • July 4th - Independence Day - Saturday, July 4, 2009
  • Labor Day - Monday, September 7, 2009
  • Thanksgiving Day - Thursday, November 26, 2009
  • Christmas Day - Friday, December 25, 2009

Bike Policy

Asheville Transit’s policy is to support and promote the use of bicycles. Bicycles shall have access to all transit vehicles whenever feasible in order to support more sustainable transportation options. Asheville Transit allows bicycles to travel on buses at no extra charge, and provides the greatest flexibility possible within the constraints of capacity and safety.
