Establishing Service
If you have never had a water service account with the City of Asheville but maintain a good credit rating, new water service may be established over the telephone by calling (828) 251-1122, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday except on holidays.
When calling for new service, you will need your driver’s license and social security number. A $55 service fee and a $100 deposit are required when establishing a new account. The $100 deposit may be waived if you are able to establish good credit. Your credit history can be checked by City of Asheville staff via Internet, or you can fax a "letter of credit" from a water, gas or electric utility to (828) 259-5965. This letter must be on the utility company stationery, must cover a minimum of a 12-month period and must indicate a good payment record.
If you currently have or recently had water service for a minimum of one year with the City of Asheville AND have established a good payment record, changing or adding locations for water service can be made by calling (828) 251-1122. There is a $55 service fee for transfer of service.
If you are unable to provide a letter of credit or do not meet the credit criteria, you can apply for new water service in person in the Customer Service Division, which is located on the first floor of City Hall, 70 Court Plaza. You must provide proper identification, including a photo ID, at the time of application.
When establishing service at a new location, all customers are required to pay a $55 service fee. A $100 deposit is also required for customers that have not provided proof of good credit. The City of Asheville provides next day water service. If you call to establish a new account today, your water will be turned on the next business day. If you wish to have your water turned on the same day you call, you will be assessed a $50 same day service fee.
If you are trying to establish water service on property without a current water connection, you must apply for water availability at the Development Services Center located at 161 South Charlotte Street. The cost for water availability service is $52 for residential customers and $78 for commercial customers. Please have your property’s PIN available when applying for water service. Results are typically available within 10 working days. Connection payment is expected within the 60 days of approval, and availability is void 60 days after the water availability is approved.
Water service can be discontinued by calling (828) 251-1122. Please be prepared to provide your account number and social security number. Water service may be discontinued the next business day, unless other arrangements are made.
