City Service Updates and Cancellations

Monday Morning 12/21

City advises caution while driving this morning, recreation centers opening at 11 a.m.

Black ice is prevalent on city and county roadways, primarily due to overnight freezing of melting snow. Residents are encouraged to exercise caution while driving, noting bridges and overpasses are especially susceptible to freezing.  Today’s high of 42 and sunshine should help alleviate this condition during daylight hours.

Primary streets are open and secondary and tertiary streets continue to be plowed.  Residents on roads awaiting service who are in need of prescription medications or medical supplies and services may call 252-1110 for assistance.  Please dial 9-1-1 for all emergencies.

Asheville Transit will begin bus service on a 3- hour delay with buses running on main roads.  Secondary streets will be serviced as road conditions permit.  Please call 253- 5691 or visit www.ashevilletransit.com for updates.

Road conditions will delay the white good and scrap metal collection scheduled for today.  Please have these items out for collection on Tuesday, Dec. 29.  For more information please call 251-1122.

City continues snow removal, adjusts transit schedules for Monday

Sunday Morning 12/20

City road crews continue to clear roads and respond to downed trees.  The main thoroughfares into and out of downtown are mostly clear but patchy areas of snow pack remain.

With temperatures dropping, roads crews are expecting ice buildup.  Black ice should be expected through the night and into Sunday morning.  Travel continues to be discouraged until road conditions improve.  When travel is necessary residents are advised to carefully assess conditions.

Asheville Transit bus routes continue to be suspended due to road conditions.

Progress Energy currently reports 46,532 customers without power in the Asheville/Buncombe area.  Weaverville Town Hall and Trinity Baptist Church are the two shelters that remain open in Buncombe county.

The Asheville Symphony concert rescheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday has been cancelled.
