Recreation - Outdoor Recreation

The Outdoor Recreation Program offers exciting outdoor adventure and environmental education opportunities for all ages and abilities. You will find all you need to make your outdoor adventure plans for the upcoming season. Activities include summer adventure camps, hiking, mountain biking, rafting, skiing, snowboarding, backpacking, youth programs, senior programs, overnight trips and special events.

All programs are offered at a reasonable cost with lots of extra value built in. Most fees are noted as R and NR. "R" refers to the fee for an Asheville city resident (living within the city limits), and "NR" refers to the fee for a non-resident (living outside the city limits).

Adult Programs


Senior Hikes

 

Sept. 11,  Ivestor Gap
A lovely 3-4 mile out & back trail in the beautiful Black Balsam area.  Bring along a small container for blueberries, we’ll try to find some!  Van ride is approximately one hour+.

 

Oct. 23, Rattlesnake Lodge Trail
A 2.6 mile out and back trail that winds through the forest offering great views.  At the top of
our hike we’ll find some   interesting foundations from the Rattlesnake Lodge.  This hike has some uphill climbs.  Van ride is approximately 20 minutes. 

 

Nov. 13, Montreat Hike
We’ll work our way along the Trestle  trail in Montreat.  Some uphill and rocky paths on this
2-3 mile out and  back trail.  Van ride is approximately 20 minutes.

 

Dec. 11, Warren Wilson River Trail
A 4 mile easy trail along the Swannanoa River at the campus of Warren Wilson College.
Van ride is approximately 15 minutes.

 

Active Adult Adventures

 

Sept. 24., Whitewater Rafting
Raft the beautiful Nantahala River through class 1-3 rapids. This is a great trip for beginner rafters, or for folks who don’t want huge rapids.  Depart the Recreation office at 10:00 am; return 6:00 pm. 
Fee: $32 R; $35 NR.

Home School Adventures for Ages 8-17

 

Sept. 16, Whitewater Rafting
Raft the beautiful Nantahala River through class 1-3 rapids. Rafters must weigh at least 60 lbs to raft.  Depart Montford Recreation Center at 10:00 am; return 6:00 pm.
Fee: $32 R; $35 NR.

 

Active Adult Adventures

Pre-registration is required.  Call 251-4029 to register.

Oct. 5, Caving at Worley’s Cave
Explore Worley’s Cave, a private cave in Eastern Tennessee, and check out the amazing formations!  Depart Montford Recreation Center at 9:00 am; return 5:00 pm.
