Inspections & Enforcement
Building Inspections
Permit holders or their authorized agent must notify the Building Safety Department for residential inspections and the individual code enforcement official for commercial inspections when work is ready for inspection. As the construction process progresses, there are certain mandatory inspections that need to be made at different intervals of the construction stage. It is the duty of the permit holder to provide access to and means for inspection of the work for any inspections required by the code.
Commercial Inspections
Commercial code enforcement officers are divided into two teams (East Team and West Team) to better serve customers. Each code enforcment officer is responsible for a specific trade inspection in their designated area.

Residential (One and Two-Family) Inspections
Residential code enforcement officers are divided into geographic regions of the city. To better serve customers, the residential code enforcement officers can, in most instances, perform all inspections required on a house.
Housing Code Inspections
Housing Code enforcement officers re-inspect all residential dwellings upon change of occupancy if they do not have a valid Housing Certificate, Life Safety Letter of Compliance, or Certificate of Occupancy that was issued on or after July 1, 1994. Initial inspections are performed by third-party inspectors who are North Carolina licensed home inspectors, hold a City Privilege License, and have registered with the City to perform housing inspections. Housing Code enforcement officers inspect all valid complaints relating to residential dwellings located within the city limits as well as the extra-territorial jurisdictional areas.
