    PROJECTS & INITIATIVES

    Automated Meter Reading (AMR) Program

In 2010, the Meter Services Division of Water Resources started a project to implement the Hot Rod AMR System.  This state-of-the-art system will allow Meter Readers to capture drive-by meter readings and automatically collect consumption, diagnostic, and status data from water meters and use that data for billing, troubleshooting, and analyzing.  This is a multi-year project that should be complete in 2013.

    Water System Capital Improvement Projects

The City of Asheville water system consists of 3 water treatment plants, approximately 1,660 miles of water lines, 40 pumping stations, and 32 storage tanks.  The city's Capital Improvement Fee generates approximately $6.4 million annually, which is dedicated to maintaining the water system.

    Water Rates & Fees Study

The Water Resources Department contracted with a financial consultant to conduct a Water Rates & Fees Study.  One purpose of the water rate study was to present a multi-year financial planning model for meeting the utility's financial obligations and to recommend changes to the water rate structure to ensure equitable rates.  The project will be completed in 2011.

    Other Projects

NCDENR is providing state funding to install new water lines in the Reynolds and Viewmont Acres Mobile Home Parks.  This will ensure a reliable water supply for approximately 100 residents.  The Reynolds MHP project is already complete.  The Viewmont Acres MHP project is near completion.

The Water Resources in-house Construction Crew is currently installing a new water line on Coleman Avenue.  Upcoming projects include water line installations on King Street, WT Weaver Boulevard, Country Club Road, Melrose Avenue, Lynmar Avenue, and Woodvale Avenue.
