Stormwater fees support Asheville’s responsibility to implement stormwater programs and services. These include:
Maintaining and improving the public storm drain system by:
- Cleaning open channels, catch basins, storm drains and culverts
- Decreasing risks of flash flooding by planning, designing and constructing storm drain infrastructure
- Maintaining roadways through street sweeping and solid waste services
Enforcing stormwater and erosion standards through:
- Enforcing erosion and sediment control measures associated with construction activities
- Reviewing new development for compliance with stormwater plans and standards
Preventing illegal dumping in the stormwater system by:
- Inspecting and managing industrial discharges to protect against illegal discharges into storm drain systems
- Responding to hazardous spills and illegal dumping of chemicals into storm drains
- Providing an on call duty officer for citizens to report illegal stormdrain connections and dumping
Raising public awareness of stormwater pollution issues through:
- Providing a stormwater education program for school-age children
- Implementing volunteer efforts to clean stream areas and support other water quality initiatives like storm drain stenciling
