Stormwater fees support Asheville’s responsibility to implement stormwater programs and services. These include:

Maintaining and improving the public storm drain system by:

    • Cleaning open channels, catch basins, storm drains and culverts
    • Decreasing risks of flash flooding by planning, designing and constructing storm drain infrastructure
    • Maintaining roadways through street sweeping and solid waste services

Enforcing stormwater and erosion standards through:

    • Enforcing erosion and sediment control measures associated with construction activities
    • Reviewing new development for compliance with stormwater plans and standards

Preventing illegal dumping in the stormwater system by:

    • Inspecting and managing industrial discharges to protect against illegal discharges into storm drain systems
    • Responding to hazardous spills and illegal dumping of chemicals into storm drains
    • Providing an on call duty officer for citizens to report illegal stormdrain connections and dumping

Raising public awareness of stormwater pollution issues through:

    • Providing a stormwater education program for school-age children
    • Implementing volunteer efforts to clean stream areas and support other water quality initiatives like storm drain stenciling
