    VICTIM SERVICES

The Victim Services Unit of the Asheville Police Department offers crisis intervention and support services to victims of crime. The Victim Services Coordinator is concerned about the well-being of crime victims and is available to talk about the incident and to assist victims in finding community resources to aid in their healing process. The needs of crime victims are assessed and referrals are made to a variety of community agencies and services. These include other victim advocate agencies, Victim Witness Assistants in the District Attorney's office, non-profit counseling and legal options, charitable organizations and social service programs. Some crime victims, referred to the North Carolina Victim Compensation Commission, may be eligible for financial reimbursement for medical and counseling bills.

    Older Adult Victim Services

The Victim Services Unit has a part-time advocate who is dedicated to working with crime victims who are either 60 years of age or older, or disabled. The Older Adult Victim Advocate assesses the victim's needs, offers comfort, investigative information and appropriate referrals to a variety of community agencies and services. When needed, the Older Adult Victim Advocate may make a home visit to meet with an older adult or disabled crime victim.

Older adult and disabled crime victims receive additional attention to ensure that they are able to adequately recover from the physical and/or psychological trauma that may occur as a result of the crime. Many older adults and disabled crime victims live on a fixed income and do not have the financial means to quickly recover from a crime. The Asheville Police Department is sensitive to these needs and hopes that the special attention provided by the Older Adult Victim Advocate can ease the trauma of victimization.

The Victim Services Unit is open from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
