PROPERTY & EVIDENCE
The effective investigation and prosecution of criminal offenders relies heavily on the careful, methodical and proper use of evidence. The Asheville Police Department’s Property & Evidence Unit maintains the integrity of each item of evidence. Careful safeguards ensure all property coming into the department’s possession is processed in accordance with state laws, city ordinances and departmental policies and procedures.
Each year, more than 9,000 items are turned into this section ranging from lost and recovered property to evidence in criminal cases. In 2006, the unit processed more than 1,832 items involved in narcotics cases and received 416 guns, which have been taken off of Asheville’s streets.
Property Retrieval
All safekeeping property can be claimed during the unit’s regular business hours by appointment. To schedule an appointment, call (828) 259-5911 or (828) 259-5894. To retrieve property, identification and the case number is required. All found property is held for 180 days. If the property is not claimed within 16 days after the expiration date, the claim is relinquished. Contact a representative of the property and evidence unit for more information and assistance if you have lost an item.
