FORENSIC SERVICES
Forensic Services of the Asheville Police Department is responsible for locating, collecting, preserving, and analyzing physical evidence at crime scenes ranging from vandalism and simple larceny to rape and homicide. In addition, the section is responsible for all of the department's latent fingerprint examinations, photography, videography, and evidence submission to the S.B.I. and F.B.I. laboratories. The section currently consists of one civilian supervisor and five civilian technicians.
Forensics is one of the most rapidly expanding fields in law enforcement, with new techniques and technological innovations constantly emerging. It is now possible to develop and analyze physical evidence and identify suspects using procedures and instruments that were unknown a few years ago. Regardless of the changes in the field, the primary goal of forensics remains unchanged - to aid law enforcement through the application of scientific principles.
