    CRIME PREVENTION

Asheville Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit works closely with the community to help prevent crime as well as to educate the public to recognize a crime risk and initiate some action to remove or reduce the risk. With the help of the community, Asheville Police Department can help to fight crime and gather information to solve cases the department would normally not be able to solve without the communities help.

Allen Dunlap currently serves as Asheville's Crime Prevention Officer and provides many programs that deal with crime prevention and protection of self and property. Some of his services include running the Citizen Police Academy, evaluation of businesses and homes to improve safety and classes on safety tips for adults and children.

The Citizens Police Academy consists of three-hour classes held weekly for 12 consecutive weeks. Thecourse includes basic classroom instruction, presentations, and demonstrations on topics such ascriminal investigation, constitutional and criminal law, use of force and forensics. Attendees also ridealong with Patrol Officers and visit the range to participate in firearms training. The course is free but an application must be completedbefore admission into the course.
