NORTHEAST: BAKER DISTRICT

The Baker District includes Asheville's northeast community and is supervised by a district commander. Five sergeants and several officers also work in the Baker District. The district sergeants supervise the daily work activities of the patrol officers, who work in assigned beats within the district.
Officers are assigned conduct 24-hour patrols in the district and actively participate in problem-solving activities with residents and business owners. Patrol activities involve bike patrol, foot patrol, and traditional vehicle patrol. In addition, officers can be found at many community social events throughout the year. Citizens are encouraged to schedule an appointment to meet Baker District police officers at the district office at 711 Fairview Rd.

Lieutenant Bill Wilke, Baker District Commander
Lt. Bill Wilke joined the department in 2000 and is also a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army, where he has served in Iraq. He returned from his most recent tour of duty in 2008. Lt. Wilke has a Bachelor’s degree from Salisbury College, a Master’s degree in Public Affairs from Western Carolina University and is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command General Staff College.

Sergeant Janice Hawkins, Baker District Supervisor
Sgt. Janice Hawkins joined the Asheville Police Department in 1999 and served the last several years a detective in the Criminal Investigations Division. She Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Northern Colorado.

Sergeant Brett Maltby, Baker District Supervisor
Sgt. Brett Maltby joined the Asheville Police Department in 2001, and most recently served as an investigator in the Drug Suppression Unit. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Western Carolina University.

Sergeant Lynn Maxwell, Baker District Supervisor
Sgt. Lynn Maxwell has been employed with the department since 1989. She is a graduate of Appalachian State University with a degree in Communications.

Sergeant Mark Byrd, Baker District Supervisor
Sgt. Mark Byrd joined the Asheville Police Department in1998, and most recently served as a member of the Drug Suppression Unit. He a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Appalachian State University & a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of South Carolina.
