Minor Work applications reviewed by staff:
The complete application and required documentation will be accepted at the Development Services Center. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday.
Major Work applications reviewed by the Historic Resources Commission:
One completed application package must be submitted to the fifth floor of the Asheville City Building for review by the Historic Resources Director prior to the application deadline each month (see link below). After the director has verified that the application package is complete, the applicant will be responsible for having it duplicated as outlined in the Major Work checklist (see link below) and delivering all copies to the Development Services Center at 161 S. Charlotte Street by 10 a.m. on Thursday of the same week. All required material samples and application fees will be collected at this time.
Application Forms and Procedures
If you are planning any new construction or addition to a structure or landscape feature within a local historic district or to one of the designated local landmarks, you must first get a certificate of appropriateness (CA) from the HRC or HRC staff. A CA is a permit issued by the HRC indicating that, in the opinion of the Commission, the proposed improvements to the structure or landscape are compatible with the historic character of the district. The staff may approve minor works, while major works require review by the Historic Resources Commissioners.
