The City of Asheville is dedicated to providing safe, reliable and efficient parking in downtown Asheville. The city's Parking Services Division provides for the orderly turnover of parking and the maximum utilization of parking spaces. Asheville provides on-street parking as well as three parking garages and several permit lots downtown.
The City of Asheville, with assistance from a consulting firm, developed a comprehensive parking study to address the existing and future parking deficiencies in the Central Business District of downtown Asheville. The study updated a previous study that was prepared in 1998 and it lists recommendations to help the city continue to provide exceptional parking services to its citizens and guests.
As identified in the Haywood Road Vision Plan, the City of Asheville, with assistance from a consulting form, developed a parking study to identify and address parking issues along the Haywood Road corridor in West Asheville.

There are more than 700 on-street metered spaces in downtown Asheville. All meters are for short term parking (two hours or less, as marked) at a cost of $1.25 per hour. All meters accept coins only. You can also pay for on-street metered parking with a credit or debit card via Passport Parking by following the instructions listed on the parking meters. The metered spaces are enforced from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
Note: Parking in the Central Business District is allowed only where indicated by signs or street markings.
Parking is FREE each Sunday and City holidays. Designated City holidays include:
- New Year's Day
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
- Good Friday
- Memorial Day
- Fourth of July
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Friday after Thanksgiving, and
- Christmas (3 days)
There is no need to "feed the meters" on these days. However, regulations for Handicapped Parking and Loading Zones are still enforced.
Please load or unload quickly, as the number of loading zones downtown is limited. A stop in one of the city's designated loading zones is limited to 30 minutes (or less, as marked). These spaces are not parking spaces. All loading zones are clearly marked, and failure to use them properly could result in a citation and fine.
Parking garages are operated for longer-duration parking as well as for monthly parking for downtown residents and employees.
