Asheville's PALS (Prevention And Life Safety) is composed of firefighters who love to educate children in a fun and exciting way. From short skits presented at schools to just walking around at Bele Chere, these clowns bring smiles to everyone. Asheville's PALS purpose is to reach children of all ages and make learning fire safety entertaining.

Asheville Fire and Rescue has two fire safety trailers, otherwise known as the smoke houses, that are used to educate children on fire safety within their homes. The fire safety trailer has a living room, kitchen and a bedroom where children learn different fire safety rules for each room, then are able to practice an escape using pretend smoke. The other trailer, used for older children and adults, can educate not only fire safety but on severe weather awareness as well. This trailer can also demonstrate the advantages to home sprinkler systems.
Other programs include:
Learn Not To Burn - A program geared toward pre-K children ages 2-4. This program uses a variety of teaching materials and a nationally developed lesson plan that recognizes the learning levels of pre-K children which allows us to educate these children in a non-threatening way.
Station Tours - All of the fire stations associated with Asheville Fire and Rescue are open to the public and citizens can schedule station tours for their families, school groups, church groups, girl/boy scouts and more. Station tours usually include viewing the main areas of the station, the trucks and visiting with the firefighters. Kids will be allowed to sit inside the truck and talk with the firefighters who can educate and answer questions regarding fire safety, fire trucks, and the daily life as a firefighter. Kids will even get to see what a firefighter looks like wearing their turn out gear!
