    DRIVEWAY PERMITS

    In the event that you will be installing, reconstructing or eliminating a driveway that connects to a city maintained street or a North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) maintained street within the city limits, you must obtain a driveway permit. Use the following criteria to decide if you need a City of Asheville permit application:

    • A driveway for a single family residential property connecting to city maintained street.
    • A driveway for a single family residential property connecting to NCDOT maintained street within the city limits.
    • A driveway for a commercial property connecting to city maintained street.

    Depending on the of type development that the driveway will serve, complete the driveway section of one of the two following permits (requires Adobe Reader):

    Use the following criteria to decide if you need a NCDOT driveway permit application:

    • A driveway for a commercial property connecting to NCDOT maintained street within the city limits.
    • A driveway for commercial property connecting to NCDOT maintained street within the extraterritorial zoning jurisdictions (ETJ).

    If the driveway is for a single family residential, multi-family or commercial properties connecting to private streets within the city limits or ETJ, a driveway permit is not required.

    Driveway Permit Fee

    When submitting the City of Asheville permit application, please include of the following permit fees that applies to you:

    • Residential: $100.00 per driveway opening
    • Commercial: $200.00 per driveway opening

    After you have received the appropriate driveway permit, you may begin construction of the driveway. To receive the permit by e-mail, complete the Request to Receive Approved Grading/Erosion and/or Driveway Permits by E-mail form (requires Adobe Reader) and included it with the permit application.
