    AFFORDABLE HOUSING PLAN

In November 2006, Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy selected a diverse group of community stakeholders to discuss how to best address the city's growing need for affordable housing. The result of that meeting was the creation of the Mayor's Affordable Housing Task Force. Mayor Bellamy met with the Task Force in September 2007 to introduce the concept of developing an Affordable Housing Plan that would guide the city of Asheville in its affordable housing related ordinances, policies, plans and actions for the next 20 years.

On November 13, 2007, the Asheville City Council voted to approve Pisgah Legal Services to create the Affordable Housing Plan working with the members of the Mayor’s Affordable Housing Task Force. Task Force members, who represented a broad spectrum of the community, met together as a group and in sub-committees 38 times over the next six months. Throughout their work on the plan, the Task Force sought to balance the community values represented by the individual members, while providing recommendations for the creation of housing for people of all incomes in Asheville.

On June 16, 2008, the completed Affordable Housing Plan was presented to the Housing and city's Community Development Committee, who then recommended it's presentation to the City Council at the June 24, 2008, regular meeting. The plan was formally accepted by City Council on this date and then referred back to the Housing and Community Development Committee for further analysis and recommendations on the implementation of the plan's goals. The 2008 Affordable Housing Plan document and it's appendices are available below for review.
